Global Social Media Statistics 2010

29th July 2010

Its not often here at Atelier SEO we talk about just Social Media (well without mixing in a bit of SEO as well) but I saw something interesting on the BBC website about the usage rates of Social Media.

In their article The ups and downs of social networks, the good old Beeb provide some fantastic graphs on social media statistics. I’m not going to harp on about the figures too much as its no great surprise that Facebook rules the roost followed by Twitter, but the results are an interesting fact anyway.

Social Media Around the World

Out of those that were tracked, Facebook has a bigger unique audience than all those combined. Whilst I am surprised to see Orkut in the list (mainly due to my own ignorance about them) their position as third highest grower is down to their audience in India and Brazil. No great surprises here though.

Social Media Country by Country

The next statistics they show are split into country.

country

uk4Again, this is no great surprise as Facebook is top for all (except for Brazil where Googles Orkut are way out in the lead). Obviously being British my focus is drawn onto the UK which shows 24.2m which considering there are 49.4m adults above 16 here shows that more than half of British adults are on Facebook (obviously I have to presume that most are adults due to Facebook rules).

As one of the commenter’s on the original article says, its a bit of a surprise that there are less than 4 million in the UK on Twitter considering how many newspaper or TV news articles including someone’s Tweets.

Time Spent on Facebook

They next show the Hours spent on Facebook per month for the different countries. This is very interesting, especially for Australia who have had a big leap. I wonder if they take usage on Smart phones as well, I personally haven’t actually logged onto Facebook on a PC in a long time, but I do use it on my iPhone.
