So, its been a little while since I posted a tip for Google Analytics (well a week is a long time in the web), so I thought I would post one which I have recently discovered and found very useful for some of my clients; tracking Visits from Google products on Google Analytics.
As most of you know who use the two Google packages together, they are not differentiated between when you look at your visits on Google Analytics. They both show up as organic traffic. So the best way to deal with this is, yes you’ve guessed it, a filter.
When you use the “Products” section on Google, hover over a product and you you see the URL starts with http://www.google.com/product. This is the factor that we will use within the filter.
The Really Important PartBefore we carry on, my absolute top tip when it comes to using Filters is to create a new profile before you place any filters in your account. This is VERY important as if it goes wrong then you could lose all future data. |
After you have created your new profile, create a new profile and copy the image below. The code is under the image as normal for you to copy and paste. NB: If you are not in the UK read below before you do this.
You may have seen there that I have used the referral google.(com|co.uk)/product, this is because I am based in the UK. If you are based else where of course you can use your own country code. If based in the USA use google.com/product. Of course the above may work for any US sites, but I can’t confirm that because most of my clicks come through the UK, perhaps someone can let me know if you tried it
Anyway, here is the code to copy and paste into your Analytics:
Referral: google.(com|co.uk)/product or google.com/product
Campaign Medium: Organic
Campaign Source: Google Products
All of the boxes should be ticked Yes apart from Case Sensitive.
As with all filters, you will have to wait for the information to come through, you can’t change the past data, so sit and wait for your traffic and under Traffic Sources you will see:

I had no idea this data was available to be tracked in Google Analytics. I guess I have to look deeper into the use of filters. I have read your previous tips and looking forward to seeing additional tips posted.
Also if you want to track your visitors that arrive through your Google base feed change the URLS in the feed file and append them with “?src=basefeed” or something similar.
