A decent Analytics package on your website can be a god send for anyone who controls a website and Google Analytics (in my opinion) is one of the best packages out there. Whilst it is very easy to use, my bet is that most people do not know even half of what it is capable of or the kind of information that it can provide. In a series of posts, I will provide below top tips on which filters can be used to pull out the most useful information.
The Really Important PartBefore we carry on, my absolute top tip when it comes to using Filters is to create a new profile before you place any filters in your account. This is VERY important as if it goes wrong then you could lose all future data. |
Obtaining SEO Rankings
This is an extremely useful filter in finding out the rankings on Search Engines of the keywords that enter your site. Well that’s a little bit of a lie, it won’t tell you the exact ranking, but it will tell you the page that it is on. Still very handy nonetheless.
To do this you will need to create 3 filters (remember to create a new profile) one to instruct Analytics to track Organic, one to instruct Analytics to track traffic from Google and one to inform Analytics what exactly you want to do with it.
Filter 1. Track only Organic Traffic
Copy the image below for filter 1:
Filter 2. Track Only Google Traffic
Copy the image below for filter 2:
Filter 3. Identify search terms and place their rankings
This one is a little bit complicated, so whilst I have placed an image, I have also included the code so you can highlight and copy:
Code:
- Campaign Term: (.*)
- Referral: (?|&)(start|b|first)=([^&]*)
- User Defined: $A1 (page: $B3)
What Next?
Obviously, because you have created a new profile, you want see anything because there will be no figures, but if you wait for a day or two, you will start to see all your stats.
Go to Analytics > Traffic > User Defined and you will see your keywords with a number as below:

Now a quick mention, that when you see (page: ), this means page 1 and when you see (page: 10) this means page 2 and so on. Please don’t get confused and think you are not very far in the SERPS
